King School has made great strides in student achievement this year.  Building on the progress begun last year with the selection of a new principal, King is transforming itself into a strong neighborhood school.  One measure of student achievement is the OAKS or Oregon Assessment of Knowledge and Skills test given to all 3rd through 8th grade students.

While official data will not be released until the fall, there was 31% growth in reading scores and 73% growth in math from last year.  District averages for this year are not available since final scores have not been tabulated.  However, compared to last year’s averages, King’s scores are in line with district averages: King students meeting in reading at 73%  vs. 83% district average and 70% “comparison school” average. Comparison schools are schools with similar race and income demographics. King’s students meeting in math is 68% vs. 67% district and 51% comparison schools. Overall, King’s students did better in every demographic category by race, income, native language or disability.

King has had trouble in the past meeting standardized test criteria, particularly among special education students and English language learners.  King also is home to an extra class of special education students from across the district who are bussed to King due to availability of space in the building.  Under Principal Patterson’s leadership, two special education students were able to be “mainstreamed” into regular classrooms.
